Female Effigy Jar

I have no idea what a female effigy jar is but if you’ve ever seen the new Star Wars movie IT LOOKS LIKE WOODEN BB8! No you can’t deny it looks like him. He has a small head and round body. All he needs is Rey to make it perfect! :3

I just googled what effigy means. It is a sculpture of a figure. So this is a sculpture of a woman. But this human is also a jar…

Sargent Murals: Heracles and the Hydra

This is Heracles. He is a mural on the ceiling Heracles likes fighting, Hebe, and more fighting. To see him you have to throw your head back and hope you have good balance or for you non-germaphobic people you can lay of floor and look stare at it :3 The museum also has mirrors that you can look in.

There are more paintings but this one is my favorite. I like this one because it’s just the most pleasing to look at in my opinion. The story of Heracles in its shortest form is Zeus+girl=Heracles. Hera got mad sent two snakes to kill Heracles, but both died. He did 12 things and then died. He got Hebe as a wife. The hydra was the third or fourth task. If you cut off one of the hydras heads, 2 grow back. So he ended up burning the neck stubs to keep them from growing back. 🙂

Camels, Camels Everywhere

One of my friends loves camels so whenever we go to the museum and we see a camel that we have not seen before we take a picture and text her it and believe me there are a lot, so many! We found them all. And in fact we have found so many I’m pretty sure that it’s the most used animal in the museum!

I like the one from Egyptian hieroglyphics the mostest. I like it because because I like Egyptian hieroglyphics. It is made out of yarn. This is not the only one. There are a bunch of them. This is the one with the camels in it. There are a lot of crocodiles in all of them. They must come across a lot of crocodiles. Probably because of the Nile.

The Doctor, Harlequin, and Colombine

Now, as you can see the people in this sculpture are dabbing. Yes, you heard me right! Dabbing, such a beautiful sight! Anyway, two boys and one girl are made out of porcelain and all dabbing or bowing.

They are from a thing called Commedia dell’arte where they make little skits. It is very old and from Italy. The world may never know if they are bowing or dabbing.

Monkey King

This is a monkey from Germany it’s made out of porcelain, but it is actually THE MONKEY KING! From the Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en! And it makes sense too:

  1. he wears a belt like the monkey king does for a while,
  2. porcelain technically comes from the ground and the monkey king is made from stone which also comes from the ground

The monkey king’s story shortened is basically he is the enemy of every god/goddess in the pantheon. >:3

The Facts:

Medea

I like this sculpture. She is in a very annoyed stance. In the regular story it’s probably because she’s trying to figure out where to put all these bodies. ☠️ I think there is a secret story though. Medea is holding a cake knife. She is waiting for the cake for the party for her dead family. 😵💀

SHE HAD BEEN WAITING FOR 19 MINUTES FOR THAT CAKE AND DIDN’T EVEN GET THE RIGHT ONE 😡

In the recent years they use pointing machines and carving tools to carve stone. In the olden days they just used carving tools. They probably used machine stuff on this.

Court Ladies Preparing Newly Woven Silk

Now, I know what it says. But! It is not ladies preparing silk; it is the HOLY PLUNGER! Yes, it doesn’t look holy, BUT it is gold, and gold is usually with a deity or god-like figure SO it is holy. Though also, in this picture, it looks like the two ladies in white are fighting over who gets to use the holy plunger, the lady in pink or red is preparing to steal it, and the lady in blue is making sure no one steals it while she is also cooking. THAT GIRL CAN MULTI-TASK!

A close up of the holy plunger (in reality used for spinning silk)

Beyond the Spectrum: Musical Masterpieces

I was at the MFA for the Beyond the Spectrum class. We were in this gallery of instruments. I like the sound of music, so I like this gallery.

In this gallery a lot of faces look at you. If you look at the way the instruments look, most of them look like they have a face. For example, this one looks like a mustache, but it is actually a bowl lyre from Uganda. This is a kind of string instrument. The music is amazing. It sounds like something that would be in Cuphead. You should listen to the music from it. It is beautiful.

Bowl lyre (ndongo)

In the next case this zither looks very uncomfortable to hold. There are two ginormous wooden balls on bottom of both ends. Unless they are hollow they must be very heavy. They could get eaten on the dragon part and then the tail would just swoop at their face. That would be very uncomfortable. It is so big that it is hard to take a picture of the whole thing. The zither makes a pleasant though very strange sound. I say it is strange because it is high, then it is low, then it is in between. It goes a little all over the place. It works together with the transitions. I don’t know how it works together, though it does.

Zither (rudra vina)

Hey, diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle. The cow jumped over the moon. Except it wasn’t a cat. And it wasn’t a cow. It actually was this instrument and a peacock. This is an instrument shaped like a peacock and it has real feathers. I wonder if the peacock they took the feather from liked it; I doubt it was very happy. They don’t have music for this fiddle of the website to listen to, it probably was too fragile. I love this fiddle because it in the shape of a peacock and it reminds me of Hera (because Hera’s sacred bird is actually a peacock).

Fiddle (mayuri)

Duck with the Fabulous Hat

Everyone thinks this is a table leg, but I know it is a duck with a fabulous hat. It is fabulous because it is a tall hat. It was so long ago that tall hats were in style. He is a very old gentleman. Though, he is not a table leg anymore; he is now a duck with a fabulous hat. I like him.

From Mina’s mom: This piece was part of the Nubia Now exhibition earlier this year, so sadly you cannot go check it out at the MFA currently.

Morning Cart

From Mina’s mom: The collection listing on the MFA’s website notes that the image is copyright restricted, so we did not post our photo of it; instead we posted our photo of the outlet below it. There are many more outlets in the contemporary and American galleries than the older wings of the museum.

I like the painting, because it is using one shade of color. It takes a while to see the cart in the painting. I remember when we first looked at the painting; it looked like two wheels and that was it.

There is a trend of only using one color. It looks like this painting followed those rules and this trend has been around before the age of computers. Looking at this painting makes me feel calm. I think it’s the blue color, because blue is associated with calmness. I like to sit on the bench in front of the painting.
